Ancient pools

Herat  has 82 roofed pools inside and outside the city. In this collection we mention a few of them. Herat’s four old localities have had 16 roofed pools as following:

– QotbiChaaq locality:

Ghodaam Pool;

Sultan Saeed Ahmad Kabir pool;

Bardah Pool;

Pahlawan Pool;

Char bagh Pool;

Hoshmand Khan Pool.

 B – Khaja Abdullah Misri locality:

Char Sawq Pool;

Zolfaghar khan Pool.

C – Bardaraniha’s Locality:

Malik Pool;

Haji Sarwar Pool;

Esmael Ghazi Pool;

Paaye Hasar Pool.

D – Mohmands Locality:

Wazir Pool;

Nag-ghashi Pool;

Kishmiri Ha Pool;

Qotbaddin Pahlawan Pool.

From these 16 pools, Hoshmand Khan and Bardah Pools were destroyed few years ago, and Qotbadden Pahlawan pool was destroyed ten years ago. Thirteen pools are remained and the most popular ones are:

Char Sawq Pool: It is the most famous and biggest pool in Herat city, which is located in the center of the old city in the northwestern corner of the second district (Khaja Abdullah Misri locality). It is encompassed to Bazaar-e-Qandahar in the west, to Haji Musa Teamcha (roofed small bazaar) in the east and Bazaar Khosh in the north. It was said that there was a piece of writing on the marble in the western entrance on margin of the porch. It was engraved by Hasan Khan Shamlo and was installed there for several years. It is missing now.

Zolfaqar Khan Pool: This pool is located almost in the middle of Khaja Abdullah Misri locality, and in the southwestern part of Sakander Jan Great Mosque. It seems to be a historical work, but it doesn’t have any inscription that shows its history. Evidently, it is related to the Ahmad Shah Dorrani’s brother, Zolfaqar khan, who was the Governor  of Herat and his family was living here. Maybe he built this pool or perhaps he reconstructed it (1671-1711).

Malik Pool: This pool is located to the southwest  of Ikhtyaruddin Citadel, and on the left side of a road which ends from Pay-e-Hasar to Darb-e-Malik and Baraman. Its western porch is connected to Nawab Mosque.

Esmael Qazi Pool: This pool which is also called Attar Bashi Pool is located in the south of Bardaraniha locality, and to the southeast of Khaja Rokhband Mosque. This pool seems bigger than common pools. It was built by Haji Hussain Attarbashi in 1655. It is also known as Emael Qazi Pool because this pool was rebuilt by a charitable man (Esmael Qazi).
