Herat – in formal and literary writings – is called ancient Herat. Herat’s symbol is its Great Mosque. It is famous for its glorious Minarets and other excellent luxurious architecture.
Herat has been known as one of the educational centers then and now. In 2009, after a research on different cities of the world by the UNESCO, it has been added to the “Thousand Cities and Thousand Lives Program”. Many image Herat to be an old city with little modern infrastructure but that is not the case and Herat has a mix of both old and new.
Herat is considered as the biggest trading center in Afghanistan because of its two trading ports with Iran and Turkmenistan, and a thriving industrial town.
