Herat Province has 54.778 square kilometers, located in the north-western part of Afghanistan in the Herai-Rood basin between Safid-kooh and Sia-kooh mountains.
Herat is mountainous in the northern and eastern parts, but in the West and South softly rolling plains prevail. Weather is mild; during the winter, temperature may drop to -10 C˚ with casual snow and much welcomed rain in spring. The summer is pleasantly warm, only for a few days temperature may peak at 38 C˚. From June to August you may experience the “120-day winds” – hot and dusty sometimes, but nicely cooling down during evening and night.
