A glimpse into Behizad’s Gallery Hall in Herat
Behizad Gallery Hall is an ironclad monument that was constructed in 1316 Afghan solar year in an area of approximately 1000 square meters when late Ghulam Farooq Osman was the governor of Herat. The Hall is a registered art work in Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture.
This glorious hall is located in the north of Marlikyar Park, in the centrist spot point of Herat, at the end of Khaja Ali Mofaq boulevard and in between of Sayed Jamullidin Afghan Square and Education.
At the beginning, the hall building was aimed at providing public area for the residents gathering and very soon it turned into a symbol of good governance and 8 years later another Governor of the province, Abdullah Khan Malikyear ordered building of two curve-architecture buildings with 3 floors in each, showcasing open relationship between the government and communities. The new magnificent and interconnected architecture surrounded the Behzad hall like a gleam jewel.
Over the years, other lavish hands help with the restoration of its ironclad ceiling. Late Fazal Ahmad Khaliqyar another governor of Herat helped the restoration with inviting artists and architects whom more decoration of the hall. Its ceiling was renovated with traditional brick and Late Ostad Mohammad Sayed Mashal, the famous miniaturist of Afghanistan decorated the hall with his famous arts during 1367 Afghan solar year. The hall become the center of culture and art for the province. The name of the hall changed to Herat Home, the Art School of Herat.
Along the miniatures and calligraphies, the artistic Gallery had decorated with the painting of famous cultural and literary characters, but had been damaged badly during Taliban Regime. With the fall of the Taliban and establishment of new government after 1380 solar year, the Gallery renovated by Amir Mohammad Ismail Khan. In 1389 with the support of Dr. Dawood Shah Sabah, farmer governor of Herat, who with deep interest that he had for expanding of art and culture, he started supporting renovation of the hall. Along other renovation including painting of famous points and characters of Herat, Mr. Saba also helped in establishment of a reference library in the Gallery. These paintings shows effigies of Khaja Abdullah Ansari, Mavlana Abdul Rahman Jami, Imam Fakhr Razi, Mohammad Ali Attar Heravi, Ostad Mohammad Sayed Mashal and Mohammad Ismail Heravi.
It is worth noting that that have plan over the years of movement of Herat Governor office from the area and the hall be used as Herat museum and artistic Gallery.
