Herat New City expanded to the north-east of the old city in the first half of the 20th century. Wide roads, governmental buildings, entertainment parks, roadsides’ parks and Herat Airport was built in the late 1950s and the Herat-Kandahar-Kabul Highway constructed in the 1960s and played an important role for trade and tourism of this city.
During President Mohammad Dawood Khan´s reign, the Herat City Master Plan considerably expanded and was supposed to be completed in 20 years. But the Soviet Red Army invasion and civil wars delayed the plan.
In 1992, following the Mujahedin’s victory and repatriation of migrants from abroad, reconstruction started and many city roads were asphalted. Since 2001 considerable attention has been given to the reconstruction of buildings and the green areas were expanded remarkably.
