People speak Dari in a local Herati Dialect, full of ancient terms and expressions. Herati dialect is one of the oldest dialects. Herat was home to many scholars, poets, theosophists and famous people such as Khaja Abdullah Ansari, Nooruddin Abdul Rahman Jami and Helali Jaghtaie.
Culture and Art
Herat is popular as the city of culture and science. It is because Herat is home to many poets, writers and artists who have grown up in this city. Herat has a number of literary and artistic associations; Herat Literary Association is the oldest and most famous. They support contemporary poets and writers and run educational programs for young poets. Wali Shah Bahra heads the Association.
A lot of Afghan contemporary musicians come from Herat, such as Ustad Amir Mohmmad, Ustad Mahmmod Khoshnawaz, Jalil Ahmad Del Ahang, Abdul Wahab Madadi, Amir Jan Sabori and Tawab Arash.
